Mary Moraa

Last week’s number one 400-meter athlete continues to dominate, securing the top position in the 800-meter category as well.

Mary Moraa has proven herself to be an unparalleled force in African athletics, clinching two number one spots in the rankings. With a personal best of 1:57.62 in the 800 meters, she leads the pack and sets a formidable standard for her competitors.

 

Halimah Nakaayi

Halimah Nakaayi represents Uganda as the second spot on the African rankings with a personal best of 1.57.62.

Her crowning achievement came in 2019 when she clinched the title of World Champion in the 800-meter event, a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. Adding to her accolades, Nakaayi secured the bronze medal at the 2022 World Indoor Championships, further solidifying her status as a force to be reckoned with on the track.

Notably, she holds both the outdoor and indoor Ugandan records for the 800 meters, as well as the 1000 meters, showcasing her versatility and dominance in middle-distance running. Nakaayi’s journey has taken her to the grandest stages of athletics, including the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she showcased her prowess by advancing to the semi-finals in the fiercely competitive 800-meter races.

Noélie Yarigo

Noélie Yarigo claims the third spot on the African athlete rankings, Representing her nation with pride, she showcased her talents on the world stage at both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, embodying the spirit of Beninese athletics with every stride.

Yarigo’s achievements extend far beyond the Olympic arena. With five Beninese national records to her name, including impressive performances in both indoor and outdoor competitions, she has cemented her status as a trailblazer in Benin’s sporting history. Among her notable feats is the mastery of the 800 meters, where she has left an indelible mark on the record books.

Yarigo’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the globe. Her relentless pursuit of excellence, coupled with her unwavering commitment to her craft, exemplifies the true essence of athleticism.

 

Emmanuel Wanyonyi

The men’s category sees Emmanuel Wanyonyi from Kenya claiming third with a personal best of 1.42.80 – Born on August 1, 2004, Wanyonyi has swiftly ascended the ranks as a formidable middle-distance runner, specializing in the fiercely contested 800 meters.

Despite his youth, his achievements rival those of seasoned veterans, marking him as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage. In a remarkable display of prowess and determination, he shattered the world road mile record with an astonishing time of 3:54.56 at the adizero Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany, on April 27, 2024. This monumental achievement cements his status as a trailblazer in the world of middle-distance running, captivating audiences worldwide with his unparalleled speed and tenacity.

As Wanyonyi continues to defy expectations and rewrite the record books, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere, reminding us of the limitless potential that lies within each individual.

 

Djamel Sedjati

Djamel Sedjati takes the second spot on the rankings – He emerged as a middle-distance runner specializing in the 800 meters.

Initially unknown, he gained prominence in 2021 after impressive performances in local meets, including a second-place finish in the 600 meters at the Algerian Winter Championships. Achieving notable success in France, Sedjati qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics with a personal best of 1:44.91.

Despite missing the Olympics due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, he bounced back to win the silver medal in the 800 meters at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, showcasing his resilience on the global stage.

 

Slimane Moula

Slimane Moula takes the third spot on the rankings. His exceptional talent is highlighted by a personal best of 1:43.38, achieved at the Meeting de Paris in June 2023.

In 2022, he claimed the title of African Champion in the 800 meters and secured victory at the prestigious BAUHAUS-galan Diamond League meet in Stockholm. Moula’s consistency and excellence were further demonstrated by his appearances in the finals of the 800 meters at both the 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Championships, where he secured 5th place on both occasions. Continuing his streak of success, Moula triumphed once again at the 2023 Doha meet, clinching his second Diamond League event title.
