Shifting focus from the track to the field, Africa is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary field athletes. The African Ventures Group has proudly unveiled the rankings of the top discus throwers in Africa, and this week’s feature highlights the top three men and women in this dynamic category.

Francois Prinsloo

Leading the charge is South Africa’s Francois Prinsloo, born in November 2001.

This exceptional discus thrower dominates the African Rankings, having triumphed in the Sun Belt discus championship for three consecutive years.

In 2024, he also conquered the hammer throw, earning the title of the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.

Prinsloo’s journey to greatness includes winning the African Youth Games in 2018 and a silver medal at the African U20 Championships in 2019.

Competing for the University of South Alabama, he qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics with a stunning throw of 67.26 meters. His excellence shone through at the NCAA Division I Championships in June 2024, where he claimed victory with a throw of 63.51 meters, securing his place on the South African team for the upcoming Olympics.

Victor Hogan

Victor Hogan, hailing from Vredenburg, South Africa, takes the second spot in the African discus rankings.

With a personal best of 67.62 meters, achieved at the South African championships in Stellenbosch, Hogan is a ten-time South African Champion and three-time African Champion.

His passion for discus began early, with significant milestones including participation in the 2006 Gymnasiade and a win at the 2007 African Junior Athletics Championships.

Hogan’s career is decorated with achievements, such as a bronze medal at the Doha Diamond League and a silver medal at the Rome Diamond League, making him a formidable force in the field.

Oussama Khennoussi

Securing the third spot is Algeria’s Oussama Khennoussi, born in December 1999.

Khennoussi holds the national record for the discus throw in Algeria and has showcased his prowess by securing a bronze medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in 2022.

In 2023, he reached new heights with a personal best throw of 61.78 meters. Khennoussi’s determination and skill have earned him consecutive national titles and accolades at international competitions, solidifying his status as one of Africa’s elite discus throwers.

 

Obiageri Pamela Amaechi

Topping the women’s rankings is Nigeria’s Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, born in 1999.

Amaechi’s stellar performances have earned her the title of African champion in the discus throw at the 2023 African Games.

She also claimed bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2022 African Championships in Athletics. Competing for the Princeton Tigers in US college athletics, Amaechi has left her mark by winning the ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Championship discus event in 2018 and setting the Ivy League record in discus.

Her international debut for Nigeria in 2022 was marked by a third-place finish at the African Championships, and she has continued to shine, representing Nigeria at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

 

Chioma Onyekwere

Chioma Onyekwere, born on June 28, 1994, in Lansing, Michigan, holds the second spot in the women’s rankings.

This American-born Nigerian athlete excels in both discus throw and shot put, holding the African and Nigerian records for discus with a personal best of 64.96 meters achieved in 2023.

Onyekwere’s impressive career includes three African titles and a historic gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she became Nigeria’s first-ever women’s discus throw champion.

Her dedication and skill have made her a prominent figure in African athletics, with numerous national and international accolades to her name.

Nora Monie Atim

Taking the third spot is Cameroon’s Nora Monie Atim, born on June 4, 1997.

Specializing in discus throw and shot put, Monie has been representing Cameroon since 2017. In 2021, she achieved a notable throw of 58.05 meters at the Drake Relays.

Monie’s talent shone brightly at the 2022 African Athletics Championships, where she won a silver medal, followed by a bronze medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games.

In 2023, she continued to excel, improving her discus record to 58.53 meters and securing gold and silver medals at the Francophonie Games.
