Moving off the track and into the field, Africa boasts some of the most remarkable field athletes. The continent’s prowess in athletics is not limited to sprints and long-distance events; the javelin throw also showcases incredible talent and dedication. This week, the African Ventures Group highlights the top three male and female javelin throwers on the continent, celebrating their remarkable achievements and contributions to the sport.

Nnamdi Chinecherem Prosper

 

Nnamdi Chinecherem Prosper, born on July 12, 2002, has earned the top spot as Africa’s leading javelin thrower, according to the latest African rankings by the African Sport Ventures Group.

In 2021, Prosper made history by winning a bronze medal in the men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. This achievement marked him as the first Nigerian to win a field medal since Esther Aghatise in 2002.

In 2022, he was selected for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, where he served as a flagbearer during the opening ceremony alongside Folashade Oluwafemiayo.

Julius Yego

Julius Yego, born on January 4, 1989, holds the second position in the African rankings.

Known as “Mr. YouTube” for learning the sport by watching online videos, Yego is the African record holder with a personal best of 92.72 meters.

He claimed the javelin title at the All-Africa Games in 2011 and the African Championships in 2012 and 2014.

Yego’s international accolades include a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Mustafa Mahmoud Abdel Khaliq

Mustafa Mahmoud Abdel Khaliq, the third-ranked javelin thrower in Africa, gained international recognition in 2022 with a bronze medal at the U23 Mediterranean Championships.

In 2023, he won the Arab U23 Championships and the Arab Championships in Marrakesh. Abdel Khaliq continued to shine in 2024, securing a bronze medal at the African Games in Accra.

He is also the reigning Egyptian champion in javelin throwing.

 

Jo-ane Van Dyk

Jo-ane Van Dyk, born on October 3, 1997, is the leading female javelin thrower in Africa.

She has accumulated multiple medals at the African Games, including a recent gold at the 2023 African Games.

Van Dyk represented South Africa at the 2020 Olympic Games and continues to dominate the field.

 

Jana van Schalkwyk

Jana van Schalkwyk, born on March 7, 2001, holds the second position in the African rankings.

She won a bronze medal at the African Championships in 2022 and improved her personal best to 57.38 meters in 2023.

Van Schalkwyk also earned a bronze medal at the 2023 World University Games and a silver medal at the 2023 African Games.
