In an extraordinary display of talent, perseverance, and resilience, Daniyal Mathews of Team Siata emerged victorious at the 2025 South African Road Championships held on February 9, 2025. The elite men’s race, held over a grueling 165-kilometer course in Midvaal, Gauteng, saw Mathews not only take home the coveted national title but also achieve a historic milestone for South African cycling.

Mathews’ win is momentous for several reasons. He is the first rider of colour to clinch the elite men’s title, a significant achievement in a sport where diversity has historically been limited. His victory also marks the first time a predominantly black team has won the national championship, underscoring the transformative changes taking place within South African cycling.

An Epic Battle for the Title

The 2025 South African Road Championship was a fierce contest, with Mathews crossing the finish line in 3 hours, 45 minutes, and 28 seconds. His time was matched by Casper Kruger of Team Honeycomb 226ers, who also completed the race in the same time, but Mathews managed to narrowly edge him out. Daniel Loubser followed closely behind, finishing just 28 seconds later.

What made this victory even more inspiring was Mathews’ journey to the top. Just two weeks before the national championship, he had suffered a crash during the Gauteng Provincial Championships. Despite this setback, Mathews demonstrated remarkable resilience, quickly recovering and regaining his form to deliver an impeccable performance at the nationals.

Team Siata: A Vision of Inclusivity and Development

Mathews’ triumph also marks a significant achievement for Team Siata, a non-profit organization based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, that is committed to developing young, aspiring cyclists from diverse backgrounds. Founded by Team Principal Ibrahim Sharif, the academy provides opportunities for riders of all age categories, from Under 11 to Elite, offering structured training and mentorship to help them succeed on both national and international stages.

The academy has gained recognition for its focus on inclusivity, aiming to make cycling a more accessible and diverse sport in South Africa. Mathews’ victory is a testament to the positive impact Team Siata is having on the cycling community, providing a platform for young riders to excel and achieve their full potential.

A Personal Victory for Mathews

Reflecting on his historic win, Mathews expressed deep gratitude to his team, supporters, and everyone who had believed in him.

“This victory is not just mine but belongs to everyone who believed in me and supported my journey. Overcoming the setback at the Gauteng Provincials made this win even more meaningful,” Mathews said.

“I’m proud to be part of Team Siata, an organization that truly touches hearts and changes lives.”

His words underscore the broader significance of his victory—not just as a personal achievement, but as a symbol of the potential for change and growth within South African cycling. Mathews’ triumph represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support of his team and community.

As the new national champion, Mathews has become a beacon of hope for young riders across the country, embodying the spirit of resilience and excellence that defines both his personal journey and the mission of Team Siata.

Looking forward, Mathews and Team Siata will continue to push boundaries, promoting diversity and inclusivity in cycling while nurturing world-class talent.
