Benin boasts a storied sporting history, with football reigning as the nation’s most beloved pastime.

The Benin national football team has left an indelible mark on recent history, notably qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, a historic achievement for the country. Beyond the football pitch, Benin has made strides in basketball, with the national team emerging victorious in the African Basketball Championship in 2017.

 The nation takes pride in its sports heroes, including footballer Razak Omotoyossi, who carved a successful career in France, Sweden, and Qatar, becoming the top scorer in the Benin Premier League in 2008. Benin’s sporting prowess further extends to the world of boxing, with former world champion Brahim Asloum capturing the WBA Light Flyweight title in 2002.
