The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) boasts a storied sporting legacy filled with remarkable achievements and national heroes.

Football stands as the nation’s most celebrated sport, with the Leopards, the national team, clinching African Cup of Nations victories in 1968 and 1974. Their achievements extend to the global stage, reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 1974 and the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations in 1998. DRC has also nurtured exceptional athletes, including Olympic gold medallists Francine Niyonsaba in marathon running, Franck Elemba in sprinting, and Venuste Niyongabo in long-distance running.

Additional milestones encompass the country’s inaugural Olympic medal—a bronze in the men’s 800m at the 1968 Summer Olympics—and their maiden Paralympic medal—a bronze in the men’s 100m at the 2000 Summer Paralympics.
