Gabon, with a rich sporting heritage, has produced world-class athletes who have made their mark on the global stage.

Notable figures include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the first Gabonese player to be honoured with the African Footballer of the Year award in 2015, alongside basketball standout Boris Diaw, an NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, and track and field sensation Anthony Obame, who secured a silver medal in the 110m hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics.

Gabon’s national football team has also left a mark, with achievements like reaching the quarter-finals of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and the semi-finals in 2017, as well as their qualification for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup where they reached the semi-finals.

Beyond football, Gabon excels in athletics, securing gold medals in the men’s 400m and 4x400m relay at the 2017 African Championships, and in boxing, with medals including a gold in the men’s light heavyweight division at the 2017 African Championships.

These accomplishments underscore Gabon’s commitment to sporting excellence and its athletes’ pride on the global stage.
