Gambia

Gambia boasts a rich and illustrious sporting history, with a focus on football, the nation’s most beloved sport. The national football team, known as the Scorpions, made history in 2012 by becoming the first Gambian team to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.

The country has also nurtured remarkable athletes, such as sprinter Suwaibou Sanneh, who secured a bronze medal in the 200m event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Among Gambia’s national heroes is wrestler Modou Lamin Nyassi, celebrated for clinching a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and swimmer Adama Jammeh, who earned a bronze medal at the 2015 African Games.

Gambia’s sporting achievements extend beyond football and athletics, with the Gambian basketball team triumphing in the African Basketball Championship in 2017, and the volleyball team securing victory in the African Volleyball Championship in 2018. The country has also excelled in athletics, collecting gold medals in the men’s 4x400m relay at the African Games in 2015 and 2019.

These successes underscore Gambia’s passion for sports and its commitment to achieving excellence on the international stage.
