Madagascar boasts a rich and storied sporting history, highlighted by the remarkable achievements of its athletes on the global stage.

Jean-Louis Ravelomanantsoa, one of its most celebrated sporting icons, secured Olympic gold and set a world record in the 800m at the 1972 Munich Olympics, along with a world record in the 1500m at the 1974 Commonwealth Games.

Swimmer Jean-Claude Rakotomavo contributed to the nation’s glory with a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and judoka Jean-Claude Randriamihaja earned a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In football, Madagascar’s national team showcased their prowess by participating in the African Cup of Nations in 2004 and achieving a historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup in 2018.
