Mozambique’s sporting achievements span various disciplines, with notable successes. In football, the nation secured the COSAFA Cup twice in 2019 and 2020 and qualified for the African Cup of Nations in 1986 and 2019, boasting the legendary Eusébio as one of its most celebrated footballers. However, Eusébio played for the Portuguese National team but was born in Maputo.

In athletics, Mozambique has produced Olympic medallists, including Maria Mutola’s gold in the 800m at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Maria de Lurdes Mutola’s gold in the 800m at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and Maria do Carmo Mutola’s bronze in the 800m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

 The country has excelled in basketball, winning the AfroBasket title twice in 2003 and 2015, and competing in the FIBA World Cup in 2019 and 2021 with the Black Mambas. Additionally, Mozambique has made success in rugby, winning the Africa Cup in 2011 and 2013.
